Zion first appears as a Jebusite stronghold that David conquered, after which it was called the city of David (2 Samuel 5:7; 1 Chronicles 11:5). Later, Solomon assembled Israel's leaders in Jerusalem to bring the ark of the covenant out of the city of David, which is Zion (1 Kings 8:1; 2 Chronicles 5:2). The psalms repeatedly celebrate Zion as God's chosen dwelling place (Psalms 76:2; Psalms 74:2; Psalms 78:68), a mountain beautiful and holy (Psalms 48:2; Psalms 50:2). Zion is personified as a daughter—the virgin daughter of Zion—who despises enemies (2 Kings 19:21). It is also the place from which a remnant escapes (2 Kings 19:31) and where God sets His king (Psalms 2:6). The psalms call for praise to God who dwells in Zion (Psalms 9:11) and express hope that salvation will come out of Zion (Psalms 14:7; Psalms 53:6). Zion hears God's judgments and rejoices (Psalms 97:8). The Lord loves the gates of Zion more than all dwellings of Jacob (Psalms 87:2), and it is said that people are born in her (Psalms 87:5). Zion is the place where the congregation appears before God (Psalms 84:7).
